General Notes:
|
The trees located in the greenspace located south of the Keystone Centre have deep roots in the City of Brandon’s horticultural history. The trees at the site are often referred to as the "Patmore Forest". Henry Lewis Patmore was a pioneer nurseryman on the prairies and is an important part of Manitoba's horticultural history.
Henry Patmore was also quite civically minded, and recognized the potential his trees held to beautify Brandon. Patmore began his efforts to beautify Brandon by planting trees on local boulevards. Many of the large trees lining the streets of Brandon’s older neighbourhoods were raised at Patmore’s nursery. Henry Patmore was also an active member of the Grounds Committee of the Brandon Provincial Exhibition Board, serving as chairman when it was first formed in the early 1890s. While on the Committee, Patmore personally oversaw the planting of trees on the exhibition grounds. The large stand of trees located in the southeast Keystone Centre grounds contains many trees matching the age range those of Patmore would have planted. A selection of these trees close to the newly developed outdoor pavilion at the Keystone Centre grounds have been designated as Heritage Trees. |
